Summer Flowers

A poster with twelve flowers of different fami...Image via WikipediaIf you want to plant the seeds of some easy summer flowers, plant them in late spring. The soil is warm, right for germination and the spring rain sets the seedlings growing. Some summer flowers which bloom annually are Zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, petunias, bachelor buttons, balsam, alyssum, marigolds, vinca, poertuluca, lobelia.

If you want the summer flowers to bloom really well make sure that they get full sunshine for more than 6 hours in a day. For Southwest and desert climate zones, afternoon shade is recommended. After you have dug the soil for about six inches deep, turn it over with a shovel. This is when you are preparing the soil. Turn over the soil with a mixture of compost, some rotten manure and fertilizer, following the package advice. There is a pattern of planting the flower plants if there is a wall or fence at the back. Plant the tallest in front and the shortest right in front. This would help the taller plants to lean against the wall and would never be inclined to put the smaller plants in the shadow.

In case the flower bed is situated in the center of the yard, the pattern to be followed is the taller plants in the center followed by middle height plants. This should then be followed by the smaller plants which form the outermost ring. Put on your creative cap as you plant the flowers with a wild mixture of colors, much like what you see in meadows. You could also use some coordinated colors. Remember pastel shades look wonderful. Talking about colors, why not select two opposite and bright colors like red and blue? Fill in with lots of white or orange and purple with a lot of cream or white. Alternatively you could even various shades of blue and throw in a bit of yellow here and there.

Birds and bugs take away a lot of your seeds. So planting has to be done much closer (3 times in fact) to each other as the instruction booklet says. Water your seeds carefully. But before that cover the seeds as directed and put a later of mulch on to. Water your plants only when it is dry and not because it is a matter of routine. Your baby plants might die if there is excess water or even when there is too little water. Before spacing your plants, wait till they have shown at least 4 true leaves after sprouting. If you want to know the perfect distance which should be kept between the flowers, they are 6, 12 and 18 inches for shorter, medium and taller flowers.

Can you imagine the more you pluck them, the more they blossom and this is the most wonderful part about summer flowers. From the point of view of the plant, the purpose of flowering is to spread seeds. Soon upon completing this job, the plant would cease to bloom. When you pluck the flowers, the plant continues to bloom. You could easily make the plant bloom the second time when you cut down the flowers by half. Though the second bloom may not be as attractive as the first time, but the flowers are gorgeous still. Late spring is the right time to plant seeds for summer flowers, if you want a magnificent display throughout the summer months.

Choosing Teak Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture need to be chosen carefully in response to the elements that it will be exposed to. Teak outdoor furniture is one of the most popular choices of furniture to be placed in the outdoors. This is because teak outdoor furniture is well noted for its durability and hardiness. This kind of wood also has beautiful grain and presentation that makes it a joy to own.

The resin oil that is naturally in this hardwood helps to repel insects as well as make it resistant to water and the drying effects of the sun. Silica is also found in teak, which makes teak outdoor furniture more durable by preventing warping, deforming and rotting. The initial appearance of your teak outdoor furniture is a warm golden color. As it is exposed to the elements of the outdoors, it will eventually lose its shine and change color to grey. Do not worry; it will not lose its durability even as it changes color.

Check The Quality

The best way to choose teak outdoor furniture is to check out the wood if it has chips, cracks and other breaks that may compromise its durability. Many wood damage starts from these blemishes compared to teak outdoor furniture that is naturally sealed without any blemishes.

You also need to be sure that the teak outdoor furniture you intend to buy is wholly made of teak. Some manufacturers may insert a different kind of wood in some places far from the discerning eye. It is best to inspect the furniture for wood that may look different (different wood grain, colors and texture) from the rest before you buy it and when it is delivered to your home. If your see knots in the teak outdoor furniture you intend to buy, consider the implication that the knot is one vulnerable spot where decay can start.

Ask your teak outdoor furniture supplier how the teak is dried. Kiln dried is best because this eliminates warping and cracking. Air dried or sun dried wood may result in inferior quality teak outdoor furniture even if the wood is of higher quality. This is because other than kiln drying, other forms of wood drying may not be as thorough.

Many people have heard of the quality and hardiness of teak outdoor furniture but this does not mean that all of it is made of high quality teak. It is best to follow this guide in choosing the right kind of teak furniture for your outdoor needs.

Tombstone Landscaping For The Community

Cemeteries often have a bad reputation as being creepy or scary places. True any cemetery can seem slightly unsettling at night. There is no reason that a cemetery has to be an unpleasant place during the day. With careful tombstone landscaping you can create a cemetery that is a place of quiet and reflection for the living to spend time with loved ones who have passed on. The right type of tombstone landscaping plays a big part in this. Regular maintenance is all part of the landscaping and despite the cost will actually be a very good investment.

Maintenance

Maintaining a cemetery is key to tombstone landscaping, it’s also a smart idea financially. It saves money to keep weeds and plants in check rather than let it grow out of control before addressing the problem. Keeping a cemetery orderly, as it were, is also a way to take the spook factor out.

Weed killers and chemicals are all fine in the short term but in long term they spell trouble for tombstone landscaping. Especially in cemeteries that are very old it is a bad idea to use chemicals to keep vegetation in check. Use environmentally friendly methods, not only are you helping the environment but you can also prevent destroying historic tombstones.

Security is also part of ensuring that tombstone landscaping does not go to waste. Security will prevent vandalism that can be irreparable and expensive. Make sure that walls, fences and gates are all in good repair to prevent untoward incidents. A great way to get the community involved and aware of the cemetery and its historic significance is to organize trips and educational visits.

Practicalities

Tombstone landscaping requires practical thinking. What could be worse than a water damaged cemetery? Make sure that the drainage system is a good one and capable of handling heavy rains. Gravel paths are better than concrete or asphalt ones, as they are more pleasing to the eye.

When choosing plants for this landscape, be very careful not to choose anything that will grow wildly out of control. You don’t want trees with big roots that might disrupt graves and monuments. Flowers are important as well; creating a pleasant environment will help people appreciate the cemetery more.

Graves that need repairing should be seen to immediately. Very old graves should have specialist attention. Restore and preserve where possible. Nothing is worse than losing valuable local history. These steps can help you with your tombstone landscaping and preservation.

Tips for Beautiful Outdoor Furniture Cushions

You’ve selected a beautiful set of furniture to grace your outdoor space this summer; now, all that’s left is to choose the perfect set of outdoor furniture cushions. This step may actually be easier said than done, when you discover the huge variety of styles, colors and fabrics that you have to choose from. And once you have purchased those cushions and placed them in their appropriate location, how will you care for them? We have all the tips for selecting and caring for outdoor furniture cushions right here.

Choosing your Material Before you begin weeding through the huge array of colors and patterns in your outdoor furniture cushions, you need to get savvy to the types of materials that will hold up best to the elements. You want those cushions to keep their shape and color through wind, rain and sunshine beating down on them. Regular cotton fabrics and urethane foam will not cut it here. You need to bring out the toughest fabrics and the waterproof fillings that will resist mold and mildew and look great all season long.

First, look for outer fabrics like vinyl or polyacrylics that will look and feel like fabric but will hold up much better in any kind of weather. Sunbrella is another fabric that is designed for outdoor use, and will look great on outdoor furniture cushions of all shapes and sizes. Interior filling should be waterproof, and there should be buttons or another way for water to drain out the bottom of the cushions. It is also a good idea to make sure that the cushions are stitched with polyester thread, instead of cotton for additional durability.

Caring for your Cushions Once you have chosen the perfect outdoor furniture cushions, you will want to make sure they last as long as possible. Proper care will be a key in a longer life expectancy for your cushions, so follow these directions to keep them looking their best. First, never sit on cushions when you are wearing suntan lotion. The lotion can get into the fabric and when the sun hits, it can create a stain. To dry your outdoor furniture cushions more quickly after a rainstorm, turn them on their sides and leave them in a sunny spot if possible.

Anything that is left outside for long periods of time is bound to get dirty and your outdoor furniture cushions are no exception. You can clean most cushions with a mild detergent and water as long as you rinse thoroughly. However, always check the manufacturer’s instructions on the item to be sure of the best care procedures. It is also a good idea to store your outdoor furniture cushions inside during the winter months. Make sure they are completely dry before storing and avoid wrapping them in plastic. With proper selection and care, your outdoor furniture cushions should bring you many seasons of good use and enjoyment.
